The remuneration of local elected officials in Portugal is not fixed at a single amount, as it varies according to several legally defined criteria.
The main factors determining the level of remuneration include:
The size of the municipality, measured by the number of registered voters;
The office held (Mayor, Councillor, President of the Parish Council, among others);
The basis on which the duties are performed, namely full-time, part-time, or on a non-permanent basis.
In addition to the base remuneration, local elected officials may also receive other legally established allowances, namely:
Representation expenses;
Holiday and Christmas allowances;
Travel and subsistence allowances incurred in the performance of their duties.
The legal basis for calculating remuneration remains indexed to the salary of the President of the Republic and is updated annually in accordance with the State Budget Law.
Detailed information and reference tables are available on the Portal Autárquico, provided by the Directorate-General for Local Authorities.
This framework applies to the elected officials of the Municipality of Vila Verde, in accordance with the legislation in force.
