The municipality of Vila Verde, due to its antiquity and cultural richness, holds a vast heritage, reflected in archaeological remains, civil and religious architecture, typical rural ensembles, ethnographic aspects of popular culture, handicrafts, traditional gastronomy, the lush green landscape, and the rivers that cross it.
Festivities and pilgrimages are one of the many expressions of the religiosity of its inhabitants. They are characterized by religious and pagan manifestations, which coexist in communion and complement each other. Around one hundred and fifty of these festive and religious events take place throughout the year in the chapels and churches of the municipality and reveal, in themselves, the dynamism and religiosity of a people committed to preserving their cultural heritage and passing on to new generations ways of living and feeling.
The fairs, held weekly, fortnightly, monthly, and annually, as well as cultural events and various thematic exhibitions, reveal a strong commitment to the cultural, social, and economic development of the region. Handicrafts increasingly occupy a prominent place in the municipality, due to their growing economic importance, the preservation of ancestral manufacturing techniques, and innovation in the design of other products.
The Lenços de Namorados, true ex-libris of this land, linen items, rag weaving, wooden miniatures and toys, ox yokes and harnesses, musical instruments, pottery, hand-painted ceramics, and granite pieces are some of the products with a strong artisanal character. The natural heritage provides numerous leisure activities, among which walking trails, jeep tours, cycling (BTT), and hunting stand out.
The Cávado and Homem rivers offer excellent conditions for canoeing and sport fishing, and there are excellent river beaches along their banks. When visiting Vila Verde, interact with its people, staying in a family environment, in Rural Tourism houses, and enjoy the knowledge and flavors of our traditional gastronomy.
The Abade de Priscos pudding, by the well-known “Pope of cooks” — the “Abade de Priscos”, a native of the parish of Turiz, who became famous for his culinary skills — is one of the delicacies that is part of our gastronomic heritage and that you should appreciate.
