Home » Eco-Wolf Trail – Station J – Gondomar Church (10/16)
At this station, located among the narrow streets and traditional houses of the village of Gondomar, you can find a large stone granary built over the pathway. This granary, a landmark of Portuguese rural architecture and also known as a “canastro” or “hórreo,” was used to store and protect cereal crops, especially maize.
Built on stone pillars, the granary is raised above the ground to prevent moisture and to protect the harvest from rodents and other animals. Ventilation is ensured through gaps between the stones or openings in the walls, allowing air to circulate and keep the grain dry and well preserved. The stone slabs placed on top of the pillars, known as “espigas,” play a crucial role by preventing rodents from climbing up and accessing the stored food.
Each granary in Gondomar has unique characteristics, reflecting the skill of local craftsmen and the availability of materials in the region. The use of stone not only ensures the durability of these structures but also demonstrates an intelligent adaptation to local climatic conditions and natural resources.
When you come across a granary, take the opportunity to observe its careful construction, particularly the details left by its builder on the stones or wooden doors, and reflect on the importance of these monuments in preserving traditions and ensuring the sustainability of local agriculture over the centuries.
