Escola + Verde Project

The Escola + Verde Project is an initiative of the Municipality of Vila Verde aimed at promoting environmental education and sustainability in schools across the municipality, contributing to the development of a more aware, engaged, and responsible educational community.

The project encourages the implementation of local initiatives that enhance environmental quality, improve quality of life, and promote the adoption of sustainable behaviours. At the same time, it seeks to foster in students a sense of social responsibility, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to develop solutions to today’s environmental challenges.

Recognising schools as key environments for educating future citizens, the Escola + Verde Project promotes the integration of environmental education into everyday school life through practical activities, collaborative projects, and awareness-raising initiatives involving students, teachers, operational staff, families, and local partners.

As part of the Municipality of Vila Verde’s Environmental Education policy, the project serves as a platform for learning, participation, and active citizenship, encouraging the entire educational community to play an active role in protecting the environment and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources.

Throughout the academic year, a wide range of activities is organised around themes such as sustainability, the circular economy, biodiversity, water and energy efficiency, waste management, and healthy eating. These initiatives seek to transform knowledge into practical action, contributing to the development of more sustainable schools and preparing environmentally aware citizens to meet the challenges of the future.

General Objective:

• To promote environmental awareness and the adoption of sustainable practices within the school environment, contributing to the development of a more informed and actively engaged educational community committed to environmental protection.

Specific Objectives:

• Integrate environmental topics into teaching curricula and educational activities;
• Encourage the active participation of children in environmental conservation initiatives;
• Promote waste reduction and the proper separation and recycling of waste in schools;
• Encourage the creation and maintenance of green spaces, such as school gardens and vegetable gardens;
• Engage students, families, and the local community in collaborative sustainability projects.

These objectives are aligned with the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), as recommended by national and international organisations, and reinforce the role of schools as agents of change in developing environmentally aware and socially responsible citizens.
