The Pilgrims’ Hostel S. Pedro de Goães in Vila Verde is located in a former primary school of this parish, which for many years served to educate numerous children and today is part of the collective memory.
After several restoration and adaptation works, it was inaugurated on April 9, 2011, following a partnership between the Municipality of Vila Verde, the Parish Council of Goães, and the S. Tiago Brotherhood Association – Espaço Jacobeus.
Driven by a spirit of solidarity, the aim is to provide accommodation and comfort for pilgrims traveling through the Municipality of Vila Verde (about 16 km) on their way to the tomb of the Apostle Santiago, while also promoting the discovery of the rich cultural heritage, traditions, customs, religious and civil monuments, typical gastronomy, and the surrounding scenic beauty.
The hostel facilities include two dormitories with bunk beds and mattresses, with a total capacity for 30 people. There are six bathrooms, five of them equipped with showers. In the entrance hall, there is a small library featuring local writers and notes related to Vila Verde. The kitchen meets the required hygiene and safety standards and allows meals to be prepared for up to 30 people.
Located in the heart of the Neiva Valley, Goães is abundant in water, one of its great natural resources, which provides fertile land for agriculture and contributes to the richness of the natural heritage, still appreciated today for its beauty.
Just a few meters away is the Neiva River, which inspired the poet Francisco Sá de Miranda, who lived in these lands for more than twenty years. The medieval bridge crossing it served for centuries as a passage for thousands of pilgrims on their way to Santiago and inspired the creation of the hostel’s logo.
With this facility, the Municipality of Vila Verde gains another cultural and social space, open to the entire local community.
We hope that all pilgrims who pass through here will want to return and that this Municipality continues to be known as a land of hospitable people, making everyone who passes through feel at home!
